Hey there! I’m Kristy Spairana, your go-to person for health and fitness!
I won’t lie to you, this has not always been my jam! I played sports through school, was pretty active after I graduated, and ate whatever I wanted. The pounds never stayed. Weeeeelll, that is not the case today in my 30 year old body! I swear, whatever I eat goes to my ass, hips, and thighs immediately and takes cover from anything that will make it go away. Throw in a chronic illness and I’m a real mess. However, a few extra pounds and Crohn’s Disease won’t define who I am or stand in the way of the goals that I will achieve.
In February 2016, I was in the middle of a bad flare up from Crohn’s Disease. For those of you that do not know what that is, allow me to explain.
Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects the small intestine, ilium, and colon. At this point, there is no cure but can be treated with certain medications like Humira, Remicade, Methotrexate, etc.
I was diagnosed in 2010 because I was having similar symptoms to someone with the disease. Because my mom was diagnosed in her early 30’s, the doctor decided it might be a good idea to get tested (insert the ridiculous colon prep face!) Once confirmed, I was put on medication in which I stayed on for nearly 6 years. In April 2016, I found out that the medicine hadn’t been doing anything!! My new doctor recommended that I be put on a biologic that should help. I started on Humira which is a shot in the belly. Let me tell ya – I am a weakling! I couldn’t handle this. I ended up being allergic to the medicine so I was taken off and I was kind of relieved.
Next, I was put on Remicade. This is an IV treatment that I get every eight weeks. I am still on this medicine but have a scare in the back of my mind. My mom was on this drug for three years and out of nowhere she had a reaction and couldn’t be on it anymore. This is a possibility with all biologics. I am hoping that this will continue to work and keep my disease under control.
Now, you’re probably wondering…how does any of this have to do with health and fitness? Please keep reading.
I am at the heaviest I’ve ever been in my life. That is hard to admit.
In March 2016, I decided that there would be no more excuses. I would get out of my own head, tell my thoughts to hit the road, and really put my energy into losing weight. I started visiting the Beachbody website frequently and found a program that I thought I might enjoy but I didn’t buy it. I started following a girl named Ashley that shared a similar story to my weight gain/loss and chronic illness. She was a Beachbody coach and her story really inspired me. I started talking with her and this went on for a week or so and I kept going back and forth until I made a decision. I’m not usually an “all in” kind of girl when it comes to spending money but I felt like this was the direction I needed to go in. I signed up for Shakeology to be delivered monthly, picked a workout, and signed up to be a Beachbody coach for the discount. I never looked back.
The community, the support, the motivation that I have received – even on my darkest of days – has kept me wanting more out of this adventure. I didn’t want to be a statistic in the obese category anymore. I want to change my life and help others change theirs and guess what? I AM!
So I invite you to join my community and take the pledge to become a healthier version of you!
